sail repairs

Concept sails is a fresh faced sail loft situated a less than 5 minute walk from Poole harbor.

We are primarily focused on sail repairs, delivering a fast and high quality service when it counts. We also however undertake other areas of marine canvass work such as sail covers, dodgers and upholstery work.

Our new facility on sandbanks road allows us to get your boat inside (unless its massive!) so we can work on the covers/upholstery indoors

We take massive pride in the quality of our repairs and the speed of our turn around even in the summer months. This is because we are passionate about what we do and as sailors ourselves we can appreciate the beauty of a sail that performs as it should.
We carry a vast range of laminates, woven cloths and rip stop materials to match your sails technologies and colour schemes as closely as possible for a near invisible repair.
As a result of this we are recommended and used by many UK sailing centers including Bray lake water sports, the Hobie Cat center, Rockley Sailing and all the Poole council funded sailing projects.

We also work closely with Noble marine and Newton Curum insurance companies and can liaise with them on your behalf getting you back on the water with minimal fuss.
We can nearly always get your repair turned around in a week however if you are in a serious rush we can offer a 24 hour or in some cases even a while you wait service.

We can offer a number of services to help you out with the running of your boat including:

Fitting or replacing sacrificial UV strips on your foresail. Using specialist materials with a large selection of colours to choose from.

Dodgers in PVC or acrylic canvass, with or without lettering.

Repairing and re covering upholstery projects

Sail bags and boom covers with a choice of colours and fittings.

Sun shade canopies for those er... hot summer months we will definitely have next year!

Laundering and Servicing

Laundering your sails removes salt and stains from the sail prolonging its overall life span.
The thinking behind regular servicing your sails is to catch the small problems before they become big problems. We will lay out the sail and inspect it for any signs of wear or damage.
Items on the checklist include:

  • Bolt rope inspection – wear on the bolt rope and surrounding area
  • Threads and seams – re-stitching worn seams before they split completely
  • Batten pockets and elastics – replacing worn batten pockets, the battens themselves and the
    elastics inside
  • Batten ends – wear at either end of the batten
  • UV strip – repair or replace
  • Clew, head and tack re-enforcement areas – check for the correct stiffness for the size of sail
    and repair if necessary
  • Windows – repair or replace fogged, stained, creased or broken windows
  • Tel tales – replace existing or fit new
  • Cuts and rips in the main cloth – general wear on the main body of the sail
  • Sail numbering/logo – fit, rebuild or replace with new
  • Leach lines – general inspection of the line, sleeve and cleats
  • Slugs – wear on the attachments and plastics

We will then compile a list of work we feel needs to be done and then call you to discuss it before we do anything. With the go ahead from you we will service the sail and finally launder it to remove the salt and make it look shiny again. You can then either collect the sail or we can store it for you in our warm, dry storage facility until you need it again at the start of the season.
Giving your sail a regular overhaul will significantly extend its life span, avoid expensive major repairs and keep it looking nice.
